Roughriders Provide "Gamelike" Practice for Bears

The Bears walked away with their first ever playoff victory tonight (42-14) as the shorthanded Roughriders took a quick exit from the playoffs. This game was never close and could have been a shutout if the bears didn't have a couple of lapses in their second string defense and major faux-paus in their second string offense. Regardless, the Bears showed why they were seeded second in the AAA division of the Rocky Mountain Football League. The Bears move on to play the Madison Lionz next week at Logan High.

Several of the Ogden Rhino-Raiders were in attendance scouting the game. The Bears should meet the Rhino-Raiders in the championship game in a few weeks.

The Bears play next on July 1 at 7 p.m. back on their regular home field, Logan High School, against the Madison Lionz.

Bears Host Playoff Game June 24

The Bears will be hosting the Boise Roughriders on June 24 at 7 p.m. on the Mountain Crest High School football field. This will be the Bears first ever playoff game and is a rematch against the Roughriders. The Bears beat the Roughriders in Boise on April 15 by a score of 26-14. The Bears (8-1) come into the contest seeded #2 in AAA and Boise (4-5) is #6.

If the Bears win, they will host the winner of the Idaho Falls/Pocatello game. The Bears have beaten Idaho Falls this season and have not played Pocatello. The Bears are positioned to play Ogden Rhino-Raiders in the Championship game on July 8 if both teams continue winning.

Bears Clinch #2 Seed with Win over Wolverines

The Bears narrowly secured the #2 seed in the AAA division of the Rocky Mountain Football League. With their win over the Utah Wolverines, the Bears stayed ahead of the Madison Lionz who beat Idaho Falls to take the North division title. Both the #1 and #2 seeds will come from the South division with the remaining four teams coming from the North division. The winners of the divisions start with a bye and the remaining teams play in the first round. Cache Valley should face the Boise Roughriders in the first round.

Cache Valley will host the first game of the playoffs and the second as well if they can beat the Boise Roughriders on June 24. If the playoffs go according to the seedings, the Bears would meet the Madison Lionz in the semi-finals and the Ogden Rhino-Raiders in the championship game.

The Bears held off the Utah Wolverines in a low scoring contest 7-6. The Bears QB accounted for the difference in the score with an extra point kick filling in for their regular kicker who was not at the game. The Wolverines missed the playoffs with the loss.

Nemesis Own Worst Enemy

A change of scenery was in order for this game compared to that played in Logan. Neither team utilized the same quarterback from their previous contest and many players were missing from both sides of the field. With a limited group of players, the Bears tallied 33 points to 6 by the Nemesis.

The Nemesis QB spent more time searching for the snap in the first half and had no time to run any play more times than not. Even after the snaps started to find the vicinity of the QB, the Nemesis were not able to mount much of an attack. Frustration got the most of the team on more than one occasion with pushing and yelling following. The Nemesis seem to have some skilled players but not enough depth to really compete at this point. If the Nemesis can add some key players they will be a team that could compete next year.

The Bears played well and tried some players at different positions. Every once-in-a-while I wonder to myself why some defensive players aren't playing offense. Then I get to see some of the defensive players trying to play offense and I understand why it doesn't happen too often -- at key positions that is. On defense one tries to knock the ball away and on offense one wants to hold onto the ball. Some of the Bear's defensive players have a difficult time holding onto the ball when playing offense -- and every once-in-a-while they end up scoring anyway, making it all the more difficult to tell them they need to stick to defense. :)

The Bears need to win their last game of the regular season to guarantee the #2 seed in the AAA conference. One team from the North division will end up with 7 wins and with a win by the Bears next week they will not have to worry about winning any tie-breaker to take the #2 seed. With the number two seed they will host their first two playoff games and possibly, very unlikely, host the championship game *if* the Rhino-Raiders happen to lose in the playoffs.

Next up for the Bears (7-1) are the Utah Wolverines (3-5).

Bears in Full Control of Season Outcome

The Bears are in full control of their playoff position. They have the opportunity to host two playoff games before the championship game if they can win out their remaining games. Their most probable matchup in the championship game would come against the Ogden Rhino-Raiders.

One more win for the Bears and they should be in the playoffs regardless. Hosting games in the playoffs is also a possibility with only one win depending on the outcome of some tie-breakers. Two wins for the Bears should guarantee them hosting two games in the playoffs. With the Bears facing the bottom three teams in their division, the possibility of winning out the season is high.

The most likely playoff scenerio would put Ogden and Cache at the top of the AAA conference with a dogfight for the remaining four spots. It is possible the remaining spots will all come from the North division. By winning out and going into the playoffs with an 8 - 1 record, the Bears would host any team from the North division in the playoffs for both rounds. Odds are the Rhino-Raiders would win in the semi-finals and that would pit the Bears against the Rhino-Raiders for the AAA championship game.

Three more regular season games and then on to the playoffs. The Bears would love to have one more shot at the Rhino-Raiders and present them with their first loss of the season. What could be better? The Bears win the championship and the Rhino-Raiders required to change their "League Winning Streak Ticker" on their Website to ZERO!
