LOGAN, Utah – After getting only one win in their first 18 games, the Utah State
women’s basketball team has won 2 of their last 3, including a 63-53 win over
Idaho at the Spectrum on Thursday.
The scoring production was spread through out the team as five Aggies were in
double-digits. Jessica Freeman led the way with a double-double, 11 points and
10 rebounds, while Jenny Gross, Ashley Rutledge, and Ali Marchant also scored
11. Danyelle Snelgro rounded out the scoring with 10.
Even with 20 turnovers Utah State was able to pull off their first win over Idaho in
eight tries.
The Aggies exploded out of the gates propelling to a 17-8 lead in the opening minutes. The Vandals recovered and scored 9 unanswered points to bring the game level at 17-17. Neither team got too far ahead while they traded the lead several times before the Aggies took a 31-30 advantage into the break.
Just over six minutes into the second half USU found themselves trailing 37-38 until Camille Brox sank a pair of free throws to put Utah State back in the lead. Then the Aggies offense poured it on. Freeman niftily spun off her defender to receive a pass and give herself room for the easy bucket. Then Marchant hit a pair of shots followed by another from Gross. Marchant was then fouled and made both her chances from the line. Before the Vandals could respond, the Aggies were up 49-38.
Utah State wouldn’t allow Idaho to recover as they had in the first half. The Aggies kept the offensive pressure on and held out for the win.
The win improves the Aggies’ league record to 2-9 with Hawaii next up on the schedule. The Rainbow Warriors visit Logan on Saturday with a tip-off set for 5 pm. This precedes the men’s Bracket Buster game with Northwestern State at 8 pm. Those with men’s tickets will be able to get into the women’s game for a full evening of college basketball.
