LOGAN, Utah – The Spectrum home court wasn’t as sweet to the Utah State
women’s basketball team as it has been to the men’s team. The women’s team
lost their 11 th straight game, fifth straight home game, on Thursday night, falling
to New Mexico State 55-48.
Ashley Rutledge led the way for the Aggies with 13 points, while fellow senior
Ali Marchant added 9 points to the effort. Marchant played only 12 minutes before
she left the game with a minor concussion.
With 4:43 to go in the first half, Marchant tried to make her way across the lane
through traffic. She was fouled and in process lost her footing and fell to the court,
smacking the back of her head on hard wood. Play was stopped until Marchant left
the floor under her own power – her 6-foot 3-inch presence would be missed by the
Aggie offense.
Freshman Lindsey Freeze came in and took Marchant’s foul shots, making 1-of-2 and tying the game at 17. Danyelle Snelgro, another freshman, hit a short-range jumper to give Utah State their second lead of the night.
The lead didn’t last long as NMSU responded with a three-pointer to make the score 20-19. The visitors would score four more before the intermission, while Jessica Freeman sank a free throw for the home team resulting in a 20-24 score line at half in favor of NMSU.
Even though the red Aggies held their lead for much of the second half the blue Aggies of Utah State constantly kept the game close. New Mexico State’s biggest lead in the half was only seven points.
USU even briefly regained the lead midway through the half. Snelgro drove to the hoop and fought through traffic for a lay-in, knotting the game at 32-32. Camille Brox was then fouled and made one of her free throws giving USU a 33-32 lead.
For the last ten minutes of play the home Aggies continued to battle keeping the win in reach. But, as they fouled NMSU to stop the clock in the closing minutes, the visiting Aggies would make nearly all their free throws thus extending their lead.
The loss is Utah State’s seventh in conference play (0-7) and 16 th on the year. The only result that has ended up in the win column for the Aggies so far is a 74-51 victory over Utah Valley State.
The next test for the women’s basketball team comes this weekend as they host 24 th nationally ranked Louisiana Tech in the Spectrum on Saturday at 7pm.
